Abedi Pele is a Ghanaian football (soccer) player. He played as an attacking midfielder and led the Ghana national team. Abedi Pele is known as one of the greatest African footballers of all time. He also played for various European clubs and gained prominence in the French Ligue 1 with Lille and Marseille. Later, he won the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League in 1993, along with other titles. Abedi Pele is the first African player to make an impact on European club football. Abedi Pele’s nomadic career starts with Real Tamale United club in Ghana in 1978, then he left Ghana after the 1982 African Cup of Nations then he joined Al Sadd in Qatar he was given $1,000 transfer fee after a short time he retired to Ghana with FC Zürich after both Kotoko and Hearts of Oak failed to higher him, then he joined AS Dragons FC de l’Ouémé in Benin. then Abedi Pele later returned to Ghana and played for Real Tamale United for one season. Abedi Pele started his Europe career with French side Chamois Niort, After that he joined Marseille before transferring to Lille on loan.
At club level, Abedi Pele was a key figure for Marseille’s dominance of the French league, As a result of it he played four league championships and two European Cup finals. Abedi Pele had played for Ghana 73 times. He was a player in the African Championships of the 1980s and ’90s with his national team, and a member of Ghana’s victorious team in the 1982 African Cup of Nations, but he was never given the opportunity to play in the FIFA World Cup. However, he became one of the dominant figures in the African football. Abedi Pele performed well in the 1992 African Cup of Nations, for which he was awarded the Player of the Tournament, it was really noticeable because he scored in three rounds that helped Ghana to reach the final, but unfortunately, he picked up a yellow card in the semi-final against Nigeria that meant he was suspended to play the final. Abedi was one the first African football players to earn a top place in FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991 and 1992. he made his first appearance in Libya in 1982 and continued to play the tournament for the next 16 year, he played his last tournament in 1998 edition in Burkina Faso. Abdi had earned a lot respect from three goals at the 1996 competition, where he led Ghana at the semi final.
Coaching carrier:
Abedi Pele has participated in more FIFA-organized charity events than any other player. Abedi is a member of the FIFA Football Committee and the Player Status Committee of both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). That’s why the South African Football Association made him a spokesperson for their 2006 World Cup.
