Andrey Arshavin is a former professional Russian footballer who was a winger for various teams. Due to his exceptional performances, he also represented the Russian national team at the international level and won numerous awards. He began his football career with Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2000 at around 19 years old. While playing for Zenit, he secured several titles, including the Russian Premier League, League Cup, UEFA Cup, and UEFA Super Cup. Early Life And Family:
Andrey Arshavin’s father, Sergey Arshavin, was an amateur footballer. As a child, Andrey survived a potentially fatal accident when he was hit by a car. At 12, his parents divorced, forcing Andrey to sleep on the floor of a cramped flat with his mother. His father, who had aspired to become a professional football player but failed, advised and helped Andrey pursue a football career.
Arshavin began playing football early and joined Zenit’s Smena football academy in his hometown at seven. Before football became his sole focus as a school student, he was a talented draughts player. His father passed away at the age of 40 due to heart failure. Andrey has written three books, including one titled “555 Questions and Answers on Women, Money, Politics, and Football.”
Club Career:
Andrey Arshavin began his club career by joining Zenit’s first-team squad in 2000. He debuted for the club in a 3-0 away win over English side Bradford City in the Intertoto Cup, coming on as a first-half substitute for Andrey Kobelev. Initially playing as a right midfielder, Arshavin played in various positions, including attacking midfielder and second striker, operating on the flank or behind the target man.
Later in his career, Arshavin joined Premier League club Arsenal. He made his first contribution for the club on March 3, 2009, in a Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion by setting up a goal for Kolo Touré in the 38th minute via a free kick. On April 21, 2009, he scored all four goals for Arsenal in a tight match against Liverpool at Anfield, earning the Man of the Match title. Arshavin delivered numerous stellar performances for Arsenal over four to five seasons before returning to Zenit on loan.
On July 13, 2015, Arshavin signed a one-year deal with Kuban Krasnodar. However, his contract was mutually dissolved on February 1, 2016.
On 18 March 2016, Arshavin signed for FC Kairat on a one-year deal with an option for a second year. Because of his great performance, he also won the Kazakhstan Premier League’s Player of the Month award for July 2016 and again in September 2016. Later, he extended his stay for an additional year. On 05 November 2018, it was announced that Arshavin would leave the club after his farewell game on 11 November 2018. On 03 December 2018, he announced his retirement as a player.
